I love mathematics and believe every student has the ability to understand and do well in the subject.
In my experience, it is generally a small misunderstanding or gap prior knowledge that prevents students from doing well.
All that is required, is to find the explanation that makes sense to the individual student.
I have had students fail a grade one year and the next year achieve an 80% average in the subject when moved to my class.

I am situated in Cape Town (South Africa).

A student once wrote in an essay to a colleague that unlike other math teachers, I never give up or tell someone they cannot do something. I will always keep finding a new way of explaining math until it makes sense.

My method requires students to make the mistakes in the contact sessions so that we can remedy the problem areas in order to not be repeated in tests or exams. Read less

To be great at math, you need to make mistakes and learn from them. Most students today are afraid of making a mistake, so they never gain the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. I encourage my students to FOLLOW THEIR GUT and do math the way they think it should be done. This affords me the opportunity to see the underlying problem in their reasoning, which we can then address so that the student does not repeat the mistakes in future.
